SilkAir Resumes Flying to the Maldives
Singapore-based airline SilkAir is flying back again to the Maldives from December 01, 2020. From the date, the regional carrier will operate twice weekly between Velana International Airport and Changi International Airport.
SilkAir airlines first began its flight operation to the Maldives in 2015, with 16 weekly landings between the Maldives and Singapore. Prior to the outbreak of COVID-19 in the Maldives, the airline operation was in full swing, but it was abruptly halted from March 27 till July 15 after the Maldives closed its international border.
Till now, the resume of 18 airlines operations including Lufthansa, Qatar Airways and Etihad to the Maldives after it reopens the border for international visitors.
The Maldives again reopened its borders from July 15 for their international travellers.The constraints on the international tourists left the Maldives under vulnerable state as it is heavily reliant on the tourism industry. In the mid of April, the World Bankslated Maldives’ economy to hit the worst due to this novel virus in the South Asian region.
Nevertheless, the latest statistics circulated by the authorities reveal the new arrivals are improving with the passage of each month after the border reopening. The Maldives reopened its borders to international tourists on 15th July with the reopening of several resorts and liveaboards. Guesthouses also resumed operations on 15th October.
The Ministry of Tourism furthermore reveals the plan of resuming operation for nine more airlines to the country from this December. Dr. Abdulla Mausoom, the Minister of Tourism, has all positive hopes that tourism is likely to record 100,000 tourists all over the world by the end of this year. The Ministry of Tourism is also optimistic about recording a total of 500,000 tourist footfalls for the year.
